So we have finally reached the 15 week count down to our big move from York in England, over to Didim in Turkey.
It’s been a long time coming and seems to have dragged for such a long time and then bam…… we’re here already.
I live in such a beautiful private rented home here in York. It’s a newly built town house and is a 3 bedroomed over 3 floors. We call it “the upside down house”
On the first floor we have our large kitchen, bedroom and w/c with a large back garden and a small front garden with parking onto the front near the front door.

The stairs that lead upto the 2nd floor are just near the front door at the start of the hallway, once you reach the top you can see right into the large living room, as you turn you come to the bathroom and then a small bedroom off the landing. Now there’s a set of stairs leading to the loft and up there is my room with the most beautiful en suite and massive deep bath and a singular shower unit.
It’s a bit of a pain when you’ve got a new born who needs fresh bottles of milk and ya have to run up and down the stairs all day, or even making a cuppa and carrying it up to the living room. It’s never actually bothered us though. We absolutely love it here. It’s the perfect family home on a quiet suburb with a secure 6 ft fence around the property and enough room in the garden for the kids to enjoy.
I don’t think I’ve ever been happier with a home. 🏡
Now as we are all excited for the big move it’s still breaks my heart a little that we are leaving this behind. We’ve had nearly 5 wonderful years living in York as I’m originally from Hull. It’s a very beautiful city to live in.
So we are packing……..can I just add, I HATE MOVING HOUSE!!!
I don’t think there is anything worse in this world then unpacking boxes and wanted a cuppa when you have no idea where the kettle and cups are 😬. The packing up bit is ok, oh Jesus though I hate the u packing. It’s seems never ending and really takes a long time to decide where tour items are going go…..and actually stay there after you’ve moved them around a thousand times over 3 days.
So because we are moving over to Turkey it’s costing us a lot of money. We are a family of 2 mummy, daddy, 6 year old daughter, 3 year old son and a 3 month old baby. There’s A LOT OF STUFF between us.
We can’t even Behind to think about toys and teddies 🧸!
If we wanted to send over a crate, it would cost us around £2000-£5000 to take every single one of our items, white goods and furniture ect. Among the price of flights, train tickets, busses and taxis as well as money for our new place in turkey and bills and living before finding jobs. It’s just not doable! There is a bloke who drives a van back and forth and Can take your items for you but again this was a little expensive for us as we had decided just to sell most of our stuff and just take over a few essentials…..Well that was the plan, once upon a time.
We are now in the middle of selling everything. I’ve opened up a Facebook page called “Kate’s clearance page” and I’ve shared the link all over the Facebook selling pages. I’ve got quite a few members in the group and we’ve sold quite a lot of bits.
What became clear to me, very very quickly is…….. EVERYBODY WANTS SOMETHING FOR NOTHING! Oh and let’s not forget the not turning up for items you’ve held! Oh my gosh!!!!!
Here comes the rant 😬
Take this for instance, I’m selling and beautiful unused real leather and suede handbag. I paid £60 for it and never used it. It’s literally come out of the carrier bag I used to transport it from the shop to my home. It’s then sat in the cupboard for a few months in brand new condition. I then decide to sell it on. I list is as brand new with tags and drop the price to £10 for a quick sale. I then get inundated with inbox messages telling me
“hiya luv il giya a fiver n pick up in 10!”
Any chance you’ll take £3 For is cod I’ve got to drive to London today cos me aunts, brothers, step daughters, cats, kitten has just been born and it’s poorly, so I can’t afford the full tenner!
Hey, il give ya £2 for it if you can drop it off! (Oh so you want me to reduce it and then pay petrol to deliver it across town for you? )
Infuriating is the only possible word that can be used in this scenario.
They you have the inbox messages that you read like its an audition for xfactor, it’s got the Oscar winning sob story as to why they really really need this handbag 👜. Me being the nice hearted person I am, I Agree to wait in the house for them to come and pick it up, yet I still seem to be sat there 2 hours later 😒 I message them and then there’s some far fetched excuse like “me foot went green and fell off” I then wait again on the rescheduled time of pick up and no show again 😡 now I’m getting angry. I can’t help myself but to leave the convo and sell on. I find it so annoying and disrespectful when you are dealing With time wasters and drainers when you have 1000 more important things to do.
“Oh well”…I tell myself, “put it down to experience and move on”
So by now I’m getting Fed up of selling and I decided to contact the local charity that deals with helping less fortunate families. I’ve sent over 2 car fulls of stuff including brand new mattress and memory Toppers, kitchenware, brand new pram carrycot, amazing new toys, new products and clothes, ect ect. Everything you could possible need.
It was selfish of me, because I got fed up of selling, but my gosh it felt good knowing that it was going to help people. I then got the bug, I would sit there on a night and work out what Item would help for which for of person in need and it makes you think, just how lucky you are and just how guilty I felt for having it, when someone else needed it. I would make a lot and shove it all in the “charity corner” I then filled my car again and took it over to the charity. I’m still selling random bits but it’s stuff that someone wouldn’t really be desperate For.
We are now about three quarters of the way through our stuff and my gosh did we have a lot! I’ve come to the Conclusion that we were unconscious hoarders. We certainly lay won’t be gathering stuff in the future just for it to sit there and collect dust. Lesson learnt there. Everything we have bought, we’ve either given away or sold it at a mere fraction of the price 😣. All that money wasted.
So when we get to Turkey we are renting an apartment for the first few months until we get to know the area and the schools and work our jobs ect, then we can decide which area we want to live permanently so we can buy.
So what are we taking across to Turkey? Clothes!! Shoes!! Anything else?
Well, I sat and watched the Black Friday sales (a week before Christmas) I though to myself “I wk see if the flight companies will have a sale” just so happens that when I went onto Skyscanner that morning all the flights I’d looked at previously and kept on my faves list had all gone from £200-300 done to under £60!!! 😲😲😲 Yes! The flights I was about to buy. They had gone down to £57 per person (don’t forget there’s 5 of us plus my mam is coming with us for a few weeks so that’s 6 tickets) they were direct day flights from Manchester airport over the Izmir I was chuffed to bits and I booked immediately!! I spoke to Cen and he said, what about luggage? I said no we have to book that separately and it was £22 per 20kg suitcase with added 6kg hand luggage with an option to multi book. We decided that all 3 adults and 2 children would take 2 20kg cases each and the baby will have car seat and pram free as luggage, aswell as 10kg bag for clothes.
So we paid just under £300 for 6 flight tickets and then just over £300 on baggage. That’s still just over £600 for it all. We where about to pay that just for one flight ticket and a bit of baggage.
What an amazing saving! Chuffed to bits with that. We then decided that these cases still won’t be enough for all our personal bits, photos, electricals, Make up (yes I have a lot of o wasn’t born with the good looks card in tour) also kids stuff and baby bottles ect. So then plan b came in.
We are sending large suitcase sized boxes containing 24kg of fabrics (clothes, shoes, bags, bedding) plastics, ect all for £36 with parcelforce (parcelstogo.com) These are taking a week from collection at my door in the U.K. all the way over to my Inlaws house in outback turkish village! It’s mind boggling as a Christmas card sent with royal mail special delivery takes 8 months to get there 😬😂.
Anyway we’ve spent every waking minute packing these bloody boxes and Cens now has to start taping them up with parcel tape like a mummy because the first to boxes arrived at the village damaged 😱😬😬😬. We just sent over the 8th box and still have a few mort to go. It’s worked out quite well as I’ve managed to get over my beautiful bedding and even things like Xmas decs and swimming accessories for the kids ect. We just have to make sure there are no electrical items within the box or we have to pay mega high Income tax to turkish customs to have the box released. Also half the time the cost of the tax is like 4x more then the cost of the actual item bought brand new.
The house is starting to look bare but also this also acts as a stress reliever as you realise your nearly there! Once we are in turkey and settled, we never have to do this again. (If I do then it can all stay in turkey and il move back with the clothes on me back 😂) either they or walk over to England with one of the local camels carrying my stuff 😂 (lighthearted joke:I hate to see working animals 😢)
So we now have 15 weeks to go and I’ve got a million things to do. What are You doing right now? I hear you ask……well the kids are at school and childminders do me and my baby girl are sat in the garden practicing sunbathing as it’s 20* already and it’s only 12 o clock. I absolutely adore the sunshine. It’s just brings such beautiful manners and moods out in everyone.
